Lazy mornings are what Christmas holidays are made for aren’t they? Who wants to get up and out of bed at 7.00 am when is still feels as if it’s the middle of the night? If you’re like me, a lazy lie-in until 8.30 am followed by a cup of fresh coffee is just what is needed on these cold winter mornings. Breakfast can be slightly extravagant in the holidays, where time is not necessarily so short. Eggs benedict can be a real treat, soft squidgy lightly toasted muffins, topped with really crisp bacon and a perfectly poached egg. (more…)

Christmas Holidays ….
Wednesday, December 28th, 2011The arrival of Autumn
Sunday, October 16th, 2011What a joy it was to have a late burst of sunshine at the beginning of October. It was great to wear summer clothes and feel the sun on our faces. The fiercely hot autumn weather peaked in a new record temperature of 29.4C (that’s 84.92F in old money), on 2 October. This was the hottest temperature recorded in October for 100 years. Now though the sun has definitely dimmed and there is an autumnal air around, with the leaves falling in crisp blue skies. (more…)
Wood, Glorious Wood
Wednesday, September 28th, 2011Trees are so beautiful at this time of year, especially those whose leaves have turned beautiful burnished shades of orange and red like the flags of Autumn. Many trees are at their peak of fruit bearing now and hopefully owners of apple and plum trees will have had enough to make an array of crumbles, pies and compotes. Nuts are also abundant at the moment. Chestnuts are tumbling from trees in their prickly cases, waiting to be toasted on the fire! If you are lucky enough to find a productive walnut tree there is nothing like enjoying wet walnuts, freshly picked and distinctively different to the walnuts enjoyed at Christmas. (more…)
Bring a piece of Europe to your bedroom
Tuesday, August 16th, 2011Whether you have been abroad or at home for your holidays, if you have stayed in hotel bedroom, B & B, or even slept in a tent, you will know that your sleeping arrangements can make or break a holiday. A creaky bed, a mattress that is too soft or too hard, a fusty or draughty room can ruin a good nights sleep. Some holiday bedrooms though can be inspirational. In France, a Louis XV bed, made from ornate carved walnut brings a regal air to a bedroom. In Scandinavia the clean simple lines create a calming, cool atmosphere. In Italy, style matches substance and delivers La Dolce Vita. (more…)
Too hot to sleep?
Sunday, July 3rd, 2011Summer is definitely here. The sun has been blazing down and reached scorching temperatures. While summer days may be a dream, the long hot nights can be something of a nightmare when it’s just too warm to sleep.
The ideal bedroom temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. A room that’s too warm can disrupt comfortable sleep.
Here are some that might help you achieve a good nights kip during the balmy nights: (more…)
Questions to ask before buying bedroom furniture
Monday, December 6th, 2010Buying bedroom furniture should not be an impulse decision. Due consideration of all aspects of your bedroom should be taken into account:
Is the bedroom being used by one person or two? How many pieces of furniture can I fit in? What pieces are essential? Obviously a bed, do I need more than one chest of drawers? How many wardrobes will I need? Could some pieces be dual purpose? If I have a large bedroom, should I go for larger items i.e. a triple wardrobe which may look more in proportion in the room? AKKA Bedroom Furniture and where it’s wood comes from
Monday, November 8th, 2010At AKKA bedroom furniture we take the responsibilty of using ethical timbers very seriously. This means that we only use our american timbers that come with a forestry stewardship council stamp. This will identify that the timber has been sourced from a mill and forest owners that participate in managing it’s forests by re-planting trees after logging has taken place. This encourages people who live in the poorer parts of the world to see that they can still make money from the trees but also still see their natural habitat not totally disappear around them. Bedroom Furniture Sets
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010Bedroom furniture sets have been bourne out of the need people have to match all of their bedroom furniture. There can be a number of reasons for this:
Buying bedroom furniture that will last
Thursday, July 29th, 2010You have finally found the vision on how you want your bedroom to look after researching the internet for months. Now down to the hard work of stripping the walls, filling in the imperfections and finally painting or wallpapering.
Have you done enough research about the quality of your bedroom furniture? No, then let me lend a hand.
Oak or walnut wooden beds
Try to buy a bed that is solid wood. Key factors to look for are no small finger pointed laminations on the siderails, head and tail rails. Look for signs of white sapwood showing towards the outside of the bed. Whilst this is not crucial to the construction, it shows that the manufacturer has taken time to put the sap face to the inside of the bed with the pure oak tones showing.
Furnishing your Bedroom
Monday, July 26th, 2010You bought your house a few years ago now and you have gradually decorated room by room, finally reaching your bedroom. This room need to feel tranquil and releaxed, so getting the mood right is important.
An important point to remember is you shouldn’t try to cram too much furniture into your bedroom space as this will ruin the look and feel. The immediate concern will be the bed, followed by storage needs. In a double bedroom a bedside cabinet either side of the bed is a good idea, particularly if you like to read at night as bedside lamps can be placed on them. A chest of drawers is a must along with wardrobes. The furniture can then be added to create the individual mood with bedding, curtains, pictures and accessories, thus adding style and personality.
