AKKA Bedroom Furniture – Wood we use

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Here at AKKA we use two woods in the manufacture of our wooden beds and bedroom furniture. We have detailed below a desription of each wood

American White Oak – White oak is similar in colour and appearance to European oak. The sapwood of American white oak is light coloured and the heatwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight grained with a medium to coarse texture, the longer rays than red oak. White oak therefore has more figure.

American Black Walnut – The sapwood of walnut is creamy white, while the heartwood is light brown to dark chocolate brown, occasionally with a purplish cast and darker streaks. Walnut can be supplied steamed, to darken sapwood or left unsteamed. The wood is generally straight grained but sometimes with wavy or curly grain that produces an attractive and decorative figure.

At Akka we make sure that all our oak /walnut beds and oak / walnut cabinets have no sapwood showing on the outside of the product just clear natural wood. This is what sets our bedroom furniture apart from our competitors.

Akka Bedroom Furniture Construction

After selecting the bedroom furniture you require, there are a number of issues consumers should be aware of when purchasing wooden bedroom furniture.

Akka Furniture supplies:

  • Oak beds and walnut beds - assembly required
  • Oak cabinets, walnut cabinets -  fully assembled
  • bedside cabinets, wooden dressing tables  -  fully assembled
  • Oak wardrobes and walnut wardrobes - assembly required

We use a mixture of solid wood and selected veneers to construct our wooden bedroom furniture.  There is an assumption that in order to purchase good quality bedroom furniutre it must be ’solid wood’.  This is incorrect.  In many cases, a good quality veneer and wood construction can outlast a piece of bedroom furniture constructed of solid wood.  The reason is that veneer is less prone to cracking.  Bedroom furniture constructed of solid wood has a tendency to sometimes crack or split if it hasn’t been dried out correctly.  This doesn’t mean that solid wood will always crack.  It only means that wooden bedroom furniture cabinets constructed with veneers should not be overlooked as purchase options.

The best quality wooden bedroom furniture will always require the drawers to be ‘dovetailed’.  Dovetails are basically a series of ‘v’ shapes cut into the sides or backs of the drawers which attach together making solid, long lasting joints.

All of AKKA furniture’s oak cabinets and walnut cabinets have dovetails all the way round the drawer boxes.

AKKA Furniture Guide To Bed Sizes

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

At AKKA Furniture we make solid wooden beds in the following sizes:

  • 3′0ft x 6′3ft  -  Single
  • 4′6ft x 6′3ft  -  Double
  • 5′0ft x 6′6ft  -  Kingsize
  • 6′0ft x 6′6ft  -  Superking

There are a number of considerations to make when purchasing a wooden bed.

The wider your bed the better your sleep will be. This is quoted by sleep experts who say that the average person tosses and turns approximately 70 times a night.

Choose a bed between 10cm / 15cm longer than your height.

Have you got enough room to walk around your bed?

Can you open your wardrobe doors?

Can you open all the drawers on your wooden bedroom furniture?

Remember that ‘ The Sleep Council ‘ recommends replacing your mattress at least every 10 years.
