Beating the January blues

Friday, January 27th, 2012

The end of January is renowned for being the most miserable time of the year with the grey clouds and the endless wait for spring.  But you don’t have to jet off to sunnier climes to find happiness.  Look around and you find lots to make you smile.

Take a look in the flowerbeds to see some pretty little snowdrops nodding their heads.

Learn something new; take a course in pottery or learning a language boosting your brainpower will raise your spirits.

Act happy by faking it until you really feel it.  Smiling is contagious and if you walk around with a big grin it won’t be long before the beams are coming back at you. (more…)

So now we are in 2012 and AKKA furniture would like to wish a very happy new year to all!

At this time of year, most of us are desperately trying to keep their new year resolutions, be it cutting out unhealthy elements in our life or doing more good things, like increasing our exercise regime. One very healthy resolution that often gets overlooked is ensuring that you get a good night’s sleep which has a massively beneficial impact on well being. (more…)

Bedroom Furniture that stands the test of time

Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011

Everyone is watching where they spend their money as essentials such as heating, electricity, gas, water and food are the priorities in these tough economic times.  Our disposable income is being squeezed, so when looking to buy bedroom furniture, do you go for the cheapest or is this a false economy? Tog Time

Monday, November 14th, 2011

As the temperature drops we want to get cosy, especially in bed. It might be time to consider changing your duvet to a higher tog rating.  A tog rating measures the warmth of a duvet. So the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet.  The amount of warmth the duvet gives depends on how much air it traps.  (more…)

Turn back the clocks

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

So the clocks have turned back and we now have one more hour to enjoy in bed.  The downside to this is, of course, waking in the dark and the early evenings drawing in.  If winter days seem short in Britain then spare a thought for those who live further North.  In midwinter around the Arctic Circle, instead of daylight the dark sky is illuminated by the northern lights.  The Scandinavians create warmth and light in their homes to compensate for the Artic winters.  Scandinavian décor has become very popular lately. Here are some ways to bring a Scandinavian feel to a home, and brighten up these dark months. (more…)

Wood, Glorious Wood

Wednesday, September 28th, 2011

Trees are so beautiful at this time of year, especially those whose leaves have turned beautiful burnished shades of orange and red like the flags of Autumn.   Many trees are at their peak of fruit bearing now and hopefully owners of apple and plum trees will have had enough to make an array of crumbles, pies and compotes.  Nuts are also abundant at the moment.  Chestnuts are tumbling from trees in their prickly cases, waiting to be toasted on the fire!  If you are lucky enough to find a productive walnut tree there is nothing like enjoying wet walnuts, freshly picked and distinctively different to the walnuts enjoyed at Christmas. Last a lifetime

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

We do live in a disposable society, where things are bought, used and discarded but at AKKA we believe in bedrooms that last a lifetime.

At AKKA, we only use quality wood. American Oak is traditional, with a beautiful grain and comes from a sustainable source. Oak definitely delivers a warmth and classical feel to a bedroom, whilst ageing beautifully over time.

Our black walnut bedroom ranges are distinct and luxurious, bringing a stylish contemporary feel.

Schools out for Summer!

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Schools out for Summer.. . although the weather has definitely cooled off!  It’s not easy to entertain the children for six long weeks without spending a fortune but there are some free ways of getting them out and exhausting them without exhausting your budget.

  • If you haven’t got a dog of your own, borrow one. Much easier to get reluctant ramblers out into the fresh air if they have a loveable pooch to lead the way.
  • A quick search on the Internet can show you how to make a kite so just wait for the next windy day and watch it fly.
  • Round up the neighbourhood kids and organise a mini Olympics. Chocolate money makes for great gold medals.

Too hot to sleep?

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

Summer is definitely here. The sun has been blazing down and reached scorching temperatures. While summer days may be a dream, the long hot nights can be something of a nightmare when it’s just too warm to sleep.

The ideal bedroom temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. A room that’s too warm can disrupt comfortable sleep.

Here are some that might help you achieve a good nights kip during the balmy nights: (more…)
