Bedroom Furniture that stands the test of time
November 23rd, 2011Everyone is watching where they spend their money as essentials such as heating, electricity, gas, water and food are the priorities in these tough economic times. Our disposable income is being squeezed, so when looking to buy bedroom furniture, do you go for the cheapest or is this a false economy? Read the rest of this entry »
Tog Time
November 14th, 2011As the temperature drops we want to get cosy, especially in bed. It might be time to consider changing your duvet to a higher tog rating. A tog rating measures the warmth of a duvet. So the higher the tog rating, the warmer the duvet. The amount of warmth the duvet gives depends on how much air it traps. Read the rest of this entry »
Turn back the clocks
November 1st, 2011So the clocks have turned back and we now have one more hour to enjoy in bed. The downside to this is, of course, waking in the dark and the early evenings drawing in. If winter days seem short in Britain then spare a thought for those who live further North. In midwinter around the Arctic Circle, instead of daylight the dark sky is illuminated by the northern lights. The Scandinavians create warmth and light in their homes to compensate for the Artic winters. Scandinavian décor has become very popular lately. Here are some ways to bring a Scandinavian feel to a home, and brighten up these dark months. Read the rest of this entry »
The arrival of Autumn
October 16th, 2011What a joy it was to have a late burst of sunshine at the beginning of October. It was great to wear summer clothes and feel the sun on our faces. The fiercely hot autumn weather peaked in a new record temperature of 29.4C (that’s 84.92F in old money), on 2 October. This was the hottest temperature recorded in October for 100 years. Now though the sun has definitely dimmed and there is an autumnal air around, with the leaves falling in crisp blue skies. Read the rest of this entry »
Wood, Glorious Wood
September 28th, 2011Trees are so beautiful at this time of year, especially those whose leaves have turned beautiful burnished shades of orange and red like the flags of Autumn. Many trees are at their peak of fruit bearing now and hopefully owners of apple and plum trees will have had enough to make an array of crumbles, pies and compotes. Nuts are also abundant at the moment. Chestnuts are tumbling from trees in their prickly cases, waiting to be toasted on the fire! If you are lucky enough to find a productive walnut tree there is nothing like enjoying wet walnuts, freshly picked and distinctively different to the walnuts enjoyed at Christmas. Moonlight and Bedrooms
September 14th, 2011While the sun might be dimming, over the last couple of nights the sky has been lit by the beautiful Harvest moon. This is the full moon, which falls nearest to the autumn equinox and this year that occurs on September 23rd. While it is a stunning sight to see, there are many myths surrounding a full moon. It is said that to stare at it will send you insane, hence the word lunatic. Plenty of people claim a full moon interrupts with their sleep. That may be the case, but lets face it, it’s mostly that they don’t have a very comfortable bed. Read the rest of this entry »
Last a lifetime
August 30th, 2011We do live in a disposable society, where things are bought, used and discarded but at AKKA we believe in bedrooms that last a lifetime.
At AKKA, we only use quality wood. American Oak is traditional, with a beautiful grain and comes from a sustainable source. Oak definitely delivers a warmth and classical feel to a bedroom, whilst ageing beautifully over time.
Our black walnut bedroom ranges are distinct and luxurious, bringing a stylish contemporary feel.
Bring a piece of Europe to your bedroom
August 16th, 2011Whether you have been abroad or at home for your holidays, if you have stayed in hotel bedroom, B & B, or even slept in a tent, you will know that your sleeping arrangements can make or break a holiday. A creaky bed, a mattress that is too soft or too hard, a fusty or draughty room can ruin a good nights sleep. Some holiday bedrooms though can be inspirational. In France, a Louis XV bed, made from ornate carved walnut brings a regal air to a bedroom. In Scandinavia the clean simple lines create a calming, cool atmosphere. In Italy, style matches substance and delivers La Dolce Vita. Read the rest of this entry »
Schools out for Summer!
July 23rd, 2011Schools out for Summer.. . although the weather has definitely cooled off! It’s not easy to entertain the children for six long weeks without spending a fortune but there are some free ways of getting them out and exhausting them without exhausting your budget.
- If you haven’t got a dog of your own, borrow one. Much easier to get reluctant ramblers out into the fresh air if they have a loveable pooch to lead the way.
- A quick search on the Internet can show you how to make a kite so just wait for the next windy day and watch it fly.
- Round up the neighbourhood kids and organise a mini Olympics. Chocolate money makes for great gold medals.
Too hot to sleep?
July 3rd, 2011Summer is definitely here. The sun has been blazing down and reached scorching temperatures. While summer days may be a dream, the long hot nights can be something of a nightmare when it’s just too warm to sleep.
The ideal bedroom temperature is around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. A room that’s too warm can disrupt comfortable sleep.
Here are some that might help you achieve a good nights kip during the balmy nights: Read the rest of this entry »
